Last but not least, while the idea of controlling and taxing marijuana as opposed to criminalising is one that’s only just been considered in most circles, it actually already happened in the past. In the United States in 1937, a new act was passed which saw legal sales of marijuana being taxed, though the tax was so ridiculously high that it made it largely impossible for anybody to buy or use it legally. It wasn’t long before lawmakers decided to take the inevitable step in the wrong direction by getting rid of the taxation system altogether, instead replacing it with an outright ban on marijuana sale and use.
